Design

Trans-form, Trans-it, trans-port.org, a conceptual FL@33 project based on everyday observations of tower cranes, self-published, award-winning magazine with attached CD-Rom and a website. Trans-form, Trans-it, trans-port.org is a self-initiated Architecture, Art and Design publication by FL@33 founders Agathe Jacquillat and Tomi Vollauschek. It's a conceptual project based on everyday observations of tower cranes combining a magazine, a CD-Rom and a website. The project was made public in July 2001 during the Royal College of Art, master degree Show in London and marked the birth and intentions of FL@33.

The large scale magazine explores the magic of urban sculptures that appear and disappear in the cities we are living in. Tower cranes that are lifting, transporting, re-constructing, drawing, cutting, performing and trans-forming are usually unnoticed by the public's eye. Trans-form presents information about tower cranes and crane operators' daily work in the sky. The CD-Rom adds videos and animations combining industrial structures with natural imagery and is presenting a cityscape metamorphosis, defining our cities as being in a larval stage. Trans-port.org offers you the possibility to build your own crane, to climb a tower crane and to be a crane operator. The widely-acclaimed project has been mentioned and featured online and in numerous magazines and books around the world.

Stockists / Currently available again: Trans-form used to be available in bookshops and museum stores around the world. It was believed to be sold out for years but a box full of Trans-form magazines in mint condition (including Trans-it of course) has recently been unearthed and the previously sold out magazine is currently available again – exclusively at stereohype.com (worldwide shipping).

Please note that a screen capture preview video of the CD-Rom's content was recently posted at flat33.com. FL@33 also created an updated 'player' for Mac OS X users to enjoy the CD-Rom's content that was originally created for Mac OS 9 at the time. A link to this free app update can be found in flat33.com's Downloads section.

Agathe Jacquillat und Tomi Vollauschek at multi-disciplinary design studio FL@33 were commissioned by Paris-based Pyramyd Editions to prepare a book on FL@33 projects. The book was published in May 2005 as part of the highly collectible and affordable Design & Designer series and magically even with edition number 33. The introduction of the book entitled Design & Designer 033 – FL@33 was written by Liz Brown who previously already wrote a FL@33 profile for Grafik magazine 110. The book features commissioned and self-initiated FL@33 projects side by side including previously unpublished work. Signed copies are exclusively available at stereohype.com.

Press clippings:

(...) "..., this is a perfectly formed volume showcasing the intriguing work of London-based Franco-Austrian duo Agathe and Tomi, aka FL@33. Its diminutive size means that the emphasis is on imagery rather than text, so copy is pretty much restricted to the captions and a preface by Liz Brown. It doesn't really matter too much, though, as the work is consistently engaging and presented in a fresh and appealing way. It's a great snapshot of what they've achieved so far and bodes well for FL@33's future." (...).
Grafik magazine

"Es gibt Designstudios, die haben einfach das gewisse Etwas. Bei dem in London beheimateten Studio FL@33 trifft das auf jeden Fall zu, denn die Arbeiten des französisch-österreichischen Teams Agathe Jacquillat und Tomi Vollauschek zeichnen sich durch ihre innovative Bildsprache und einen besonderen Humor aus."

Artist(s)

FL@33 is a multi-disciplinary design studio based in London and founded in 2001 by Royal College of Art graduates Agathe Jacquillat and Tomi Vollauschek. Since then FL@33 has created an award-winning, internationally published body of work, ranging from self-initiated projects to commissioned work for clients from around the world, across many different sectors, regardless of size and budget. From logos to integrated identity systems, intriguing imagery to complete book designs, from poster campaigns to websites, moving image and interior design.

Agathe and Tomi are friendly, passionate and dedicated designers who give international lectures, judge, art direct, consult, design, curate, exhibit, contribute to books and magazines, conceive, compile, edit and write their own books, give workshops, and also develop design products for the studio’s sister company Stereohype. The founding directors have been described as multi-lingual, multi-specialised design activists consistently striving to exceed expectations of their demanding clients – using wit and humour to create fresh, imaginative and engaging visual communication, products and interior designs.

A FL@33 monograph (Design & Designer 033 – FL@33) was published in 2005 by Pyramyd and the three books authored and designed by FL@33 were published worldwide by Laurence King and partner publishers: Postcard (2008), Made & Sold: Toys, T-Shirts, Prints, Zines and Other Stuff (2009) and more recently The 3D Type Book (2011). In the same year FL@33’s popular online sound collection project bzzzpeek.com was exhibited in New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Agathe and Tomi self-published the widely acclaimed Trans-form magazine (2001) and the tenth anniversary book and exhibition catalogue Stereohype 2004–2014.

Series

Paris-based Pyramyd Editions has regularly been publishing monographs since 2002 featuring work by selected artists, graphic and product designers. These bilingual monographs form part of a series called Design & Designer. The books contain introductions and descriptions in French and English for the many featured project visuals. Each publication title has a serial number (such as Designer & Designer 033 – FL@33).

In some cases – especially within the first 25 of the series – a second and even third edition was published with fresh new content and a 'v.2' or 'v.3' added to the book title. Other titles go out of print and do not seem to be reprinted in the foreseeable future (such as Antoine+Manuel's book for example). At time of writing this text the Designer & Designer series already reached serial number 086.

A few selected titles are available here especially by some of our own contributors who already created button badges and more for Stereohype. Fill any gaps you may have in your collection or start yours today.
