This artwork is one of four badge designs featuring details of direction signs on British roads. Phil Baines has long been fascinated by this subject and has written about aspects of it in Eye magazine and other publications.

Phil Baines (1958–2024) ♥

Phil Baines’ practice had several strands but included print work for leading publishers and arts organisations notably Matt’s Gallery; lettering for memorials including the 7 July 2005 Bombings Memorial in London’s Hyde Park; and the rebranding and exhibition design of Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft. Somehow he combined this with teaching at Central Saint Martins, UAL where he was Professor of Typography, and curated the Central Lettering Record with Catherine Dixon with whom he also wrote Signs, lettering in the environment, (2003).
