Design

‘When it comes to expressing yourself via emoji, it can be tricky to express negative emotions. There’s nothing stronger than an angry smiley or a “thumbs down”. But sometimes I do miss expressions of irony, a face-palm or maybe even a middle finger. You have to be careful with those though, because negative emotions might seem a lot more extreme in writing than in person. So, to minimize misunderstandings, I’ve prepared a “just kiddin” emoji. As soon as you’ve gone a little too far (or when you’re afraid that the person you’re conversing with might not get that you’re joking), this one comes in handy.’ — Friso Blankevoort

Artist

Friso Blankevoort (a.k.a. Freshco) is an illustrator / designer who lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. As far as he can remember he has always been drawing. Skateboarding culture has had a significant impact on his artistry, being inspired by the graffiti he saw around him when he first started skateboarding as a teenager in Haarlem and Amsterdam. Freshco studied illustration at the Willem the Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.

Series

These custom emoji artworks originally featured in the FL@33-designed book The Story of Emoji by Gavin Lucas (Prestel Publishing, March 2016). If you could create a new emoji, what would it be? Gavin Lucas asked a number of image-makers from around the world to design new emoji characters they wish really existed. Book contributions were submitted just before iOS 9 was released (which also included the 'Metal Fingers' / 'Devil's Horns' emoji addition). One day soon – hopefully – all these bespoke emoji suggestions will be included... This one inch (25mm) button badge series is a collaboration between Stereohype, Gavin Lucas and the selected emoji contributors Ali Graham, Crispin Finn, David Henckel, FL@33, Friso Blankevoort, Hey Studio, Jan Kallwejt, Julian Morey, Liza Nelson, Lucy Vigrass, Matt Chase, Matthew Bromley, Mr Bingo, Nick Shea, Noma Bar, Peskimo, Richard Hogg, Rob Flowers, Serge SeidlitzTane Williams and TwoPoints. Stereohype sells Emoji Series badges separately and gives them away as a free surprise badge with selected Stereohype T-shirts. Released: April 2016 as part of the book launch exhibition.
