Michael C. Place studied Graphic Design at Newcastle College in the UK from 1988–1990 and makes no secret of the fact that he left before graduating, in order to follow his dream of designing record sleeves. After gaining experience at various studios in London, Michael joined the influential graphics studio The Designers Republic in Sheffield, where he worked for 9 years. Whilst there Michael produced some of the best-known, seminal and iconic works of the studio that have since earned a place in cultural history. In 2000 Michael took a break from the design world to embark on a 10-month world trip, returning in 2001 to found design consultancy Build. Michael features in the acclaimed 2007 film Helvetica – A Documentary Film, has spoken at numerous conferences worldwide, and has several times been
a judge at the prestigious D&AD global awards. Build’s work has been published in publications worldwide and both Michael and the studio have shown work at exhibitions in the UK and abroad, including Tokyo, New York, Paris and London. Michael is the Creative Director of Build.
