A New Way To Experience Fashion: Fashion Films On DVD
FLY DVD is a departure from traditional print magazines that for decades
have presented their stories and subject matter through a two dimensional
silent medium. FLY is the first fashion and art "moving-magazine"
creating an engaging and interactive multi-sensory experience integrating
fashion, film, art, music and dialogue to stimulate, inspire and inform
the viewer.
In December 2005 FLY DVD launched its Zero Issue at Art Basel in Miami
featuring the works of established and emerging photographers, filmmakers,
animators, artists and musicians. Some of the contributors to FLY's Zero
Issue include Alex Cayley, John Malkovich, Martien Mulder and Ryan McGinness
with music from Colder, Devendra Banhart, Philip Glass, Elliot
Smith and Output Recordings amongst others. FLY also features some of
the most prominent names in fashion such as Boudicca, Cloak, Calvin Klein,
Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent, Y3 and Zac Posen.
FLY's fashion films feature the current season's collection of just one
designer, showcasing the clothes more prominently. In addition, the DVD
medium provides an option for designers to both link viewers directly
to their websites and also include additional promotional material such
as lookbooks and catalogues to be viewed on the DVD itself.
FLY's Zero Issue has over 90% original content and includes 14 fashion
films, 6 interviews and documentaries, 9 music videos as well as The Loop
-- a 30 minute collage of FLY's content edited with a mixed soundtrack
with music from Output Recordings' new compilation CD, Channel Vol 4.
Confirmed contributors to FLY's next issue include Alex Antitch, Alex
Cayley, KT Auleta, Mike Figgis, Vanina Sorrenti and John Malkovich. FLY's
next issue will also feature designers such as Boudicca, Burberry Prorsum,
Jean Paul Gaultier, Louis Vuitton, Riccardo Tisci and Surface2Air amongst
others.
press clippings:
"Fashion fans are growing bored with the countless, undistinguishable
arty glossies that litter upscale newsstands. This quarterly ups the ante
by taking form on DVD; a creative union between filmmakers, photographers,
designers, and artists, FLY contains documentaries, music videos, interviews,
and naturally, fashion films"
The Intelligence Group's Trend Central
"This is conventional storytelling by fashion standards, but the
format has changed. The quarterly magazine, called FLY, is presented on
a DVD, which adds to the traditional two-dimensional paper format the
components of motion, dialogue and music.......The first issue offers
a slick and seamless presentation of 14 collections and numerous features"
New York Times
"Fly is so right so intelligent and beautiful. Hyper modern
with all the right vision. Many people have attempted this in the past
and regularly those who work on stills do not necessarily understand how
to make imagery which is cinematic, with movement and tension and atmosphere.
There is such a successful feel-to FLY....beautiful quality"
Boudicca
"FLY teams both emerging and established artists, animators, and
photographers with a single designer's current collection to create smooth,
compelling, and conceptual film footage. FLY's slick production quality
and over 120 minutes of fashion films, interviews, documentaries, and
music videos make it look like a seasoned magazine on film"
