The designs for the three badges are intended to work both individually, and
as a set. They are based on the idea of fairy or 'folk' tales. In these stories,
which include familiar tales such as 'Red Riding Hood' and 'Hansel and Gretel'
as well as the less well known, 'The Red Shoes', certain motifs are used repeatedly.
The badge illustrations feature the wolf (the villain), the woodcutter's axe
(the woodcutter features frequently as a character in these stories, often as
the hero) and a pair of red shoes (these are an object which brings joy to the
wearer, and in 'The Red Shoes' the heroine becomes obsessed with wearing them.)
These illustrations are created using a mixture of hand-made collage and drawing
in combination with computer based techniques. They are intended to convey an
idea of the characters and atmosphere of the fairy tales.
I am a recent Graphic Design graduate from Nottingham Trent University. I am
currently seeking work experience in the design industry, possibly in the area
of web/interactive design or motion graphics. I also enjoy creating illustrative
work, which I often use within my design work. A selection from my portfolio
can be viewed at my personal website, which is a work in progress. I have
exhibited my work at Demographic (Nottingham Trent degree show) and New Designers
2006 exhibitions. My work also featured in the 'exposure' section of Computer
Arts magazine November 2006 issue.
