DEADLINE: 25TH AUGUST, 2008 LATER

CALL FOR ENTRIES >>> MADE AND SOLD: GRAPHIC
DESIGNER'S SIDELINES
No entry fee.
THE TITLE
It is already very likely that the book will indeed be called
Made and Sold. The Graphic designer's Sidelines addition
is currently only a working title though since illustrator's, artist's
and all multi-disciplinary designer's products are welcome. It really
should be called something like Visual Communicator's Sidelines
– but that just sounds a bit too complicated... Any suggestions
are welcome.
BACKGROUND
Self-initiated projects seem to become an increasingly important part
in graphic design practice. Young independent design studios and freelancers
often state that their regular self-initiated projects inform their commissioned
work and vice versa. Many of these independent design studios define themselves
as inter-, cross- and
multi-disciplinary practitioners and many of them produce, manufacture
and sell their very own sidelines – anything from toys to garments,
fonts to wallpapers. This is not only a commercial and entrepreneurial
activity satisfying the individual needs for diversity but is often simply
stated by designers as a great way to stay sane, fresh and creative.
THE BOOK
Agathe Jacquillat and Tomi Vollauschek from London-based design studio
FL@33 are currently compiling and designing an exciting new book entitled
Made and Sold: Graphic Designer's Sidelines (working title) to
be published worldwide by Laurence King Publishing in 2009. This book
will present the most exciting self-initiated projects created by a new
generation of multi-disciplinary practitioners. Eligible for possible
inclusion are products that are produced as part of a one-off series or
in editions of three or more AND are self-initiated, commercial and entrepreneurial
AND produced/manufactured by the interdisciplinary practitioners (and
their direct suppliers) AND by designers who sell their products either
directly (i.e. online) and/or work with selected stockists of their choice.
The designers’ sidelines will include toys, T-shirt and other garments,
accessories such as button badges, self-published fonts, books, magazines
and fanzines, interior designs such as wall stickers, wallpapers and prints,
furniture, household items such as ceramic plates and mugs, office utilities
and stationery including custom tapes, etc.
Submissions are now welcome.
PLEASE NOTE: EXCLUDED from the book will be products that were commissioned
(either directly or via any public voting sytems) or were skin designs
only – you know the usual suspects. (We will for instance not include
our very own Mr Papillon Kit Cat Qee since we only designed the skin and
didn't commission the toy itself but the toy company did).
Made and Sold will feature the very best examples from around the world
on
240 full-colour pages. Like our first book POSTCARD (see www.postcard-book.info)
the new one will also introduce the individuals and/or studios behind
all featured creations in a dedicated chapter.
Selected contributors will of course receive a complimentary copy
of the book.
If you have any questions AFTER having read the COMPLETE submission guidelines
(above and below) AND the frequently asked questions (with answers) below
– please get in touch with Tomi at submit[at]flat33.com or +44 (0)20

FAQ – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS [last updated:1st
September, 2008]
Q: How many projects am I allowed to submit?
A: There is no limit. Your chances for inclusion are higher though
if you only submit your very best ones rather than distracting us with
a bigger choice.
Q: Do you prefer flat digital artworks (TIF), pictures of the products
themselves or even a physical product mailed to you?
A: Well – we would suggest to take a decent picture of your products
on WHITE background. Please do additionally also submit the digital artwork
itself if you have it – so we have a better choice. We are of course
always happy to receive a physical sample – so yes: you may mail
samples to us.
Q: I can't access the server with the login details you posted
in your call for entries? Can I email my submissions to you instead?
A: The login details are fine. We had plenty of successful uploads
already. Please try again. Please do NOT under any circumstances email
your submissions BUT send a CD/DVD instead or upload your submission if
you can.
Q: Can I simply type my name in the licence agreement and not
sign it?
A: What? NO! Please do SIGN WITH A REAL PEN and submit the signed original
OR a scanned digital copy with the rest of your submission!
Q: How should I call my files?
A: Some people have already been replacing each others 'ContributorAgreement.pdf'
several times on our server because they have not uploaded their files
in a folder indicating clearly which files belong to whom. Please do therefore
use appropriate file names! For example like this: YourName_ProjectName1.tif
AND YourName_ProjectDescription.doc AND YourName_Agreement.tif. Ideally
you place them all in a folder or .zip or .sit compress everything altogether.
Thank you!
