BACKGROUND
The ongoing fascination with three-dimensional letterforms – found, arranged and/or created from unique materials and then exhibited and/or photographed to be 'flattened' for two-dimensional print – is as 'now' in contemporary typographic design as it appears to be timeless. Graphic design students and professionals alike create an endless stream of variants of a similar theme with the alphabet and its 26 letters (plus a few numbers and signs here and there) at the centre of attention. An amazing amount of innovative, playful and inspirational projects are continuously being produced by emerging and established talents from around the world and the latest book by FL@33 – provisionally entitled ABC Dimensional – will document the best of the best.
THE BOOK
Agathe Jacquillat and Tomi Vollauschek from London-based design studio FL@33 are currently compiling and designing an exciting new book entitled ABC Dimensional (working title) to be published worldwide by Laurence King Publishing in spring 2011.
ABC Dimensional will be a handbook, source of inspiration and the a truly comprehensive showcase focusing 100% on three-dimensional experimental letterforms, sculptural shape-shifting letters, tactile experiences and surprising and inventive ways to interpret the alphabet, ranging from beautiful and humorous to poetic, witty and conceptual. Featured dimensional projects will cover a few classic/historical examples but will overall focus on recent and brand new typographic projects and experiments – imaginative work with sculptural and three-dimensional letterforms.

Self-initiated experiments are as welcome as commercially-led projects. Work by individuals, studios and collectives or collaborative projects and workshops are all eligible to submit. We are looking for complete alphabets but if you only created a few letters or words do submit anyway – a few sample letters or one word might also suffice to get the concept and idea across and to be featured in the book. Even though we are focusing on an altogether more physical, handmade and tactile feeling please note that even if you only have a concept typeface as sketches and/or vector graphics – as long as the letterforms could have been 'built' with found objects, silhouettes and shapes etc – please do get in touch and submit your work. We would like to see anything that could be described as exciting, innovative, conceptual, promotional, experimental, playful, decorative, witty and/or humorous.
Examples: Letter-shaped Silhouettes of Found Objects, Aerial Views, Grid-based Multiples/Matrix, Handmade Three-dimensional Letters (same material used for letters but also combined objects to shape letters), Installations/Sculptural letterforms/Optical illusions/Vantage points, Light and Shadow, Drawing Board (things that could theoretically have been made/built/arranged and then photographed but were only drawn to document the idea/concept), etc
ABC Dimensional will feature the very best examples from around the world
on 240 full-colour pages. Like the first two books FL@33 (flat33.com) conceived, wrote, compiled and designed, namely POSTCARD (Laurence King, 2008, postcard-book.info) and Made & Sold (Laurence King, 2009, madeandsold.com),
the new one will also introduce the individuals and/or studios behind
all featured creations in a dedicated chapter.
Submissions are now welcome.
Selected contributors will of course receive a complimentary copy
of the book.

FAQ – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS [last updated:19th
November, 2009]
Q: How should I call my files?
A: Some people have already been replacing each others 'ContributorAgreement.pdf' several times on our server because they have not uploaded their files in a folder indicating clearly which files belong to whom. Please do therefore use appropriate file names! For example like this: YourName_ProjectName1.tif AND YourName_ProjectDescription.doc AND YourName_Agreement.tif. Ideally
you place your complete submission in a folder and zip or sit compress everything altogether – like this YourName.zip or YourName.sit. Thank you!
Q: Can I simply type my name in the licence agreement and not sign it?
A: What? NO! Please do SIGN WITH A REAL PEN and submit the signed original OR a scanned digital copy with the rest of your submission!
Q: How many projects am I allowed to submit?
A: There is no limit. Your chances for inclusion are higher though
if you only submit your very best ones rather than distracting us with
a bigger choice.
Q: Do you prefer flat digital artworks (TIF) or pictures of the letterforms/typefaces in situ?
A: Well – we would suggest to take a decent picture of your products
on WHITE or neutral background whenever possible/applicable or in context of course if that's more appropriate. We expect most submissions to be photographs of the found/discovered or created letterforms. Please do additionally also submit the digital artwork
itself if you have it – so we have a better choice. We are of course
always happy to receive a physical sample – in case you would like to mail
additional samples to us.
Q: I can't access the server with the login details you posted
in your call for entries? Can I email my submissions to you instead?
A: The login details are fine. We had plenty of successful uploads
already. Please try again. Please do NOT under any circumstances email
your submissions BUT send a CD/DVD instead or upload your submission if
you can.
